DESCRIPTION OF THE STEP TRAINEESHIP PROVIDER

The mission of the Laboratory for the Research of Medical and Bioethics is to:

1. Cover all research and teaching undergraduate and graduate needs of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh) School of Law, as well the needs of other AUTh Departments, concerning the subject of Medical Law and Bioethics, addressing issues such as:
- Medical liability;
- Medical ethics;
- Beginning of human life;
- Notion of death;
- Euthanasia;
- Living wills;
- Assisted suicide;
- Transplants;
- Cosmetic surgery;
- Sex change;
- Human organs trafficking;
- Medically assisted reproduction;
- Genetic tests;
- Gene therapy;
- Cloning;
- Abortion;
- Human experiments;
- Palliative care;
- Stem cells research;
- Sex selection;
- Genetically modified organisms;
- Clinical studies;
- DNA analysis; etc.

2. Develop all kinds of collaboration in the spirit of reciprocity with other Greek and foreign universities or research centres, under the presupposition that their scientific purposes coincide, are in line or complement the ones of the Laboratory;

3. Organise scientific lectures, workshops, seminars, summer schools, congresses and other scientific events;

4. Effectuate publications and papers and to invite Greek and foreign scientists of recognised standing, in order to fulfil its purposes;

5. Develop collaborations with international organizations, public services and other scientific and social carriers, in Greece and abroad, so that the scientific personnel of the Laboratory contributes to the study and to the submission of proposals for the policy planning and alternative means of addressing issues within the scope of the knowledge field of the Laboratory;

6. Offer its services to private persons, according to the provisions of the presidential decree 159/1984 (issue A’, no 53);

7. Provide opinions (to courts etc.) on issues which are relevant in the field of its known object, according to the statutory legislation;

8. Collect, process, store and provide data in the field of medical law and bioethics;

9. Assume consulting work and studies, with the purpose of satisfying the needs of the society in this very field;

10. Maintain its own website and to proceed to the edition of an e-journal in the field of its interest; and

11. Assume any other scientific, research and educational initiative or activity which are relevant in the field of its known object.

The tasks of the Trainee include inter alia:
- Writing and making a database of ECtHR and ECJ case law (medical law and bioethics);
- Writing and making a database of case law from the Supreme Court of their country of origin (medical law and bioethics);
- Writing for the laboratory's publications;
- Contributing to the organisation of a summer school;
- Contributing to the organisation of a conference
